Dr. David Wishart and Russell Greiner Lead Advances in AI-Driven Metabolomics

University of Alberta researchers David Wishart and Russell Greiner are making significant strides in combining artificial intelligence with metabolomics and cheminformatics.
Since 2001, the duo has pioneered the use of machine learning to study metabolites—key molecules involved in metabolism. Their work includes major initiatives such as the Human Metabolome Project (HMP) and the Human Metabolome Database (HMDB), which have become essential resources in clinical and environmental research.
One of their standout innovations is CFM-ID, an advanced algorithm that accurately predicts mass spectrometry data for small molecules, greatly improving metabolite identification and supporting new discoveries.
Their ongoing research is expected to enhance personalized medicine, environmental monitoring, and drug development, highlighting the growing impact of AI in scientific research.
David Wishart Wins the Gerard Herzberg Gold Medal Award

David Wishart has won the Gerard Herzberg Gold Medal Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to science and research leadership. As Distinguished University Professor in the Departments of Biological Sciences and Computing Science at the University of Alberta and leader of the TMIC Wishart Node, Dr. Wishart has spent over 30 years pioneering metabolomics, decoding the tiny molecules that flow through our bodies to reveal how we live, what we eat, and what diseases we may face. Under his guidance, the Wishart Node has developed groundbreaking tools such as the Human Metabolome Database, MetaboAnalyst, DrugBank, and FooDB, and founded The Metabolomics Innovation Centre (TMIC), Canada’s national hub for metabolomics research. His team has advanced exposomics and personalized medicine by applying machine learning to identify hidden environmental toxins and predict their effects on human health.

Congratulations to Dr. David Wishart, recipient of the 2025 University Cup, the University of Alberta’s highest honour for academic staff. A professor in the Departments of Biological Sciences and Computing Science, Dr. Wishart is internationally recognized as a pioneer in metabolomics, a field he helped establish through his visionary work connecting genes, environment, and health via small molecules. Over his 30+ year career, he has developed widely used open-access tools such as the Human Metabolome Database, DrugBank, and MetaboAnalyst, and played a key role in founding The Metabolomics Innovation Centre, helping position Canada as a global leader in the field. A passionate educator and mentor, Dr. Wishart has authored influential textbooks and championed hands-on scientific training, and as a proud member of the Métis Nation of Alberta, he advocates for open science and the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge, ensuring that research benefits all communities.
